The writings of Ian Mc Gilchrist are worth referencing here. In establishing meaning and seeking the truth we humans have multiple faculties of which EQ is one (we also have attention, perception, judgement, IQ, Social Intelligence, apprehension, and creativity). Most of these faculties are developable, so working on them extends our developmental perspective.
I love that book, Nial - I'm halfway through it and it's given me so much food for thought! I actually believe I got it after a recommendation from you a while ago! Thank you so much for bringing McGirchrist into this conversation! I think from our developmental perspective those faculties can be seen as distinct (but interdependent) lines of development but also, as you well say, capacitities we can actually purposefully develop. I love the perspective of VD as - to an extent - a collection of trainable abilities, grounded in inherently human capacities.
I'm still immersed in it myself and there are so many parallels and overlaps to AED or VD, the mind boggles. Perhaps when we are both beyond page 1,376 we will have a discussion!!
“Interestingly, curiosity did not make the anxiety disappear, but it did something remarkable: it made it bearable.”
Thank you Alice
